Gimme Back My Gas!

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

One of the newest trends among thieves is stealing gas. For some, it’s just siphoning the fuel out of your gas tank. For others, they crawl up underneath the vehicle, poke a hole in the tank and drain it dry. Nobody is immune to these tactics, but there are a few things you can do to lessen your risk of getting ripped off by gas thieves.

1. Park your car inside. Putting your car in the garage overnight will greatly reduce the risk of getting your gas stolen while you sleep.

2. Park in a visible place. Regardless of how nice your car is, don’t be afraid to park it around other cars. Thieves are less likely to steal gas from a car in a crowded area than if it is parked in a place where nobody else will be.

3. Get a locking cap. This won’t prevent the guys from crawling underneath your car, but it will deter the less ambitious thieves who siphon the fuel out of your tank.

4. Move your car at times. If you have a car that sits in one place for extended periods of time, move it every few days. Thieves will notice if your car remains unmoved and then it becomes a target.

5. Get a sensitive alarm system. If your system is sensitive enough, it might go off at the slight vibration of a power drill penetrating your tank. It’s worth a shot.

It’s bad enough getting ripped off by you local gas station. You don’t need thieves to do the same thing. Hopefully these suggestions will keep your car safe from gas grabbers and fuel robbers.
